Deliverance | Shelfside Review
After finishing this Christian dungeon crawler campaign board game, Shelfside brings another review! Play as angels sent down from heaven to defeat demons and princes of darkness with 1-4 players. You'll have to strategize with skills and level up cards to win against difficult missions with their own unique mechanics, all on a tabletop with angelic minis! But there may be some downsides like rulebook wackiness and balancing shenanigans.

Top 10 Most Influential Board Games Ever
Переглядів 25 тис.День тому
What has impacted the board game industry the most? We answer this question for all tabletop games except TTRPGs through the lens of game mechanics. Although Euros like Catan have had amazing cultural impact, it isn’t necessarily at the top of this list! We take a trip down board game history in seeing classics like Chess and Monopoly and how they affect the way we view and play games. And don’...
Mythic Battles: Ragnarok Review - Nordic Value!
Переглядів 6 тис.14 днів тому
We review this mini-laden skirmish battler! Set in Norse mythology, Mythic Battles Ragnarok has players taking divinities (like Thor) and pitting them against each other, helped by the draft of smaller units. This type of ameritrash war-game is not new, but now there's deck and hand management, combined with a ridiculous amount of units to pick from (helped from the kickstarter stretch goal unl...

Gloomhaven: Buttons and Bugs Review - Size Don't Matter?
Переглядів 21 тис.Місяць тому
We review the newest, tiniest Gloomhaven game! This Cephalofair release takes the popular BGG Euro dungeon crawler and condenses it into purely single player! Buttons and Bugs (BnB for short), literally fits in the palm of your hand, and has the same asymmetry in the campaign as before! However, it does streamline a lot of the combat, so is that a good or bad thing? We completed the game so we ...

Rated highly on Boardgamegeek (BGG) for customization, Plaid Hat Games’ amertrash card dueling grants lots of fun moments in just an hour! We take another dive into Twilight Imperium 4th edition! This popular BGG area control from Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) has captured many an ameritrash and Euro player with its asymmetry and negotiation that we did a Shelfside review on. We review the new Star Wars TCG: Star Wars Unlimited! This Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) card game has players taking favorite sci-fi characters like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in an asymmetric card dueler. There’s plenty of inspiration drawn from LCGs as well, like resourcing cards from hand (Disney Lorcana) and having a leader to trigger every round (like the TCG Hearthstone). You can use MT...

We review Bloodstones, a high fantasy area control game! This is Martin Wallace’s (Brass Birmingham designer) first game via Gamefound for his own company, Wallace Designs, where 6 asymmetrical players take multi-use tiles and fight over the world of Fal. I just got my copy of Jaws and am starting out with a Hatchet character named Jerry Sienfeld. I imagine an over-exaggerated, cartoonish, caricature of Jerry's face occasionally peaking out from the shadow of that hat and duster as he throws an axe deep into someone's frontal lobe. My demolitionist is named The Czar of Heavy Splooge, which is basically just what that character is out of the box. I mean, just look at him. He's a pervy looking little fella who takes out his enemies and obstacles by unleashing a heavy discharge on them. This is why I have to play a solo campaign. 😂😢😂 Regardless, the class tips are sincerely appreciated and will be noted for one Mr. Seinfeld going forward.

I'd love an update. "The State of Haven Today." Have you checked out the Frosthaven play surface books or solo scenarios? Do we know which production errors have been fixed and which remain? Any hints at what's next? My dream is Spacehaven, featuring a ship phase, which isn't just movement and combat, but also resource management for fuel, repairs, upgrades, crew, and weapons. It'd also have a planetary exploration phase featuring classic Haven combat and gameplay, but with a new, shiny, sci-fi coat of paint. Want to import an old Haven character? You'd simply have to play a special scenario where that character somehow gets transported through time into Spacehaven.

Everyone RAVES about Frosthaven. I played Gloomhaven a few times and just couldn’t quite get into it. 😔 I cut my teeth on HeroQuest/Mutant Chronicles as a kid and Descent during college, so maybe I’m just looking for a more classic approach? KD:M is my current heavy game.

Once a player understands the game and knows how to negotiate then there is little actual luck in the game. Players can ask other players for information on a safe leader in exchange for spice to avoid an assassination, players can bribe atreides to know what a card up for auction is, bribe to see the spice blow deck or the storm deck. Players can bribe each other to sweaten an alliance deal or use truthtrance to prevent a player from lying. Game is all about information and how to obtain it.

Despite mixed reviews, I was initially hesitant. However, after an epic session of Last Light, I had a fantastic time! The components are solid, especially the ship minis. Adding more races for players to choose from is an easy change. I'll also consider potential tech adjustments, which shouldn't be too difficult. As a big fan of intense, head-to-head battling games like Blood Rage, TI4, and Eclipse, this game is right up my alley :) If I had the luxury of a day to myself, single and without kids, TI4 would be my go-to. But in my current reality, Last Light slots perfectly into my gaming schedule :)

I’m here for the heroscape mention! Having enough of the classic game is pretty key to enjoying it unfortunately. There’s some really fun armies, they just get sooo expensive. I’m definitely getting the new stuff, but I’mostly just excited for the synergies that will mix with the old stuff I already have.

This gives me big Darksiders vibes (and not just because of the theme but also the art style and player abilities) which is very cool, but the game itself doesn't really seem like my thing. Feels a little generic. It speaks to your review quality that I watched the whole video regardless!

This review was exactly what I needed to justify my feelings about the 3rd edition. I've had multiple friend groups be introduced to modern board games with Betrayl (2nd) and when we decided to try out this 3rd edition, the Haunts all felt a bit stale in comparison. We've yet to have a Haunt that envoles the blend of campy horror of 2nd edition. (Spoiler Alert for 3rd edition: Our first scenario was that the real estate agent for the house we were all touring was trying to kill everyone with a demon. Basically the Haunt revealer was thematically killed and took over a demon, and there was really no special mechanics. And thats been a theme for many of the scenarios. The mechanics are streamlined, but it comes at the cost that many Haunts end up feeling similar. Also, the Characters are all pretty balanced; Oliver "Swift" is supposed to be 3rd editions Flash, but his speed is the same as 3 other characters at 5! And they got rid of the Crazy Man and Scared Girl Omens!

Great list! I agree bout Bridge being most influential card game. I think Poker takes the top in us culture, including the betting/gambling mechanic which adds a unique element since the stakes can change hand to hand. Bizrre you can win big on a worthless hand, and lose big on a powerful one. Incredible game. Another important influential game mechanic is the 'race' game: Sorry, Pachisi, and Backgammon still played by millions in the Middle East. Monopoly is probably a variation of this with the added commerce/trade element. Racing to Purchase the most properties.

I feel like 1829/1830 for economic and stock games and Agricola, or something else, for modern euros should've been on there. One of either Gloomhaven, Magic, or heroquest could go I think. I don't think your choices are bad, but just have knid of a crimped view of the whole genre. An adventure game, a tricktaker, area control, roll & move/trading, TCG, deckbuilding, stock game, modern euro, party/social game, one more? i feel like delineating the important subgenres or most prominent mechanics first would help.

Love this game. Been collecting everything over the years and own it all now. I didnt deal with big monsters at all. I viled the tips off and glued them on transparant bases, so much better! As for checking their stats, there’s a perfect fine summary document to print on bgg. Only con remaining is that searching tiles can be a hassle, especially with more expansions.

Engine Building and Worker Placement seem to have a bigger impact on modern strategy games. Most games I’ve played have that mechanism somehow. Maybe I’m biased based on the games I play.
